Cataract surgery prices are moving sharply downward in China for one specific, well-documented reason: the government buys lens implants in bulk, nationally, and publishes what it pays. The lens is the single most expensive component of cataract surgery, and the numbers below come straight from the procurement results. The surgical fee on top is set province by province — that part we will not pretend to price.
The bulk-buy, in plain numbers
In November 2023 China’s National Healthcare Security Administration ran its fourth national procurement round for high-value medical consumables, covering intraocular lenses (IOLs). Winning prices were disclosed publicly and reported by state media. Execution began nationwide in mid-2024:
| Intraocular lens type | Before procurement | Winning price |
|---|---|---|
| Monofocal (highest-volume basic lens) | ¥2,500 | ≈¥800 |
| Monofocal, newer-generation (Johnson & Johnson) | ¥10,000 | ≈¥1,100 |
| Trifocal, non-toric (premium) | ¥23,000 | ≈¥8,900 |
| Extended depth-of-focus (Alcon) | ¥11,000 | ≈¥3,500 |
What these numbers are. Prices for the lens implant itself, from national procurement results reported via People’s Daily and summarised in the NHSA’s own statistical bulletin (which cites an average 60% price reduction across IOL procurement). They do not include the surgeon’s fee, facility fee, anaesthesia, drops, or follow-up visits.
So what does the whole procedure cost?
The honest answer: the lens is now the part you can look up; the rest you must ask for. China prices the surgical service component province by province under the national pricing guideline, and no single national figure exists. A practical quote request looks like this:
- Ask for the itemised split: lens implant, surgical service fee, facility and anaesthesia, post-operative medications and reviews. A hospital used to self-pay patients will produce this without blinking.
- Name the lens you want by type — monofocal, trifocal, EDF — because the procurement table above is exactly the price ladder the hospital is buying from.
- Ask which lens brands the hospital stocks from the procurement catalogue, and at what price band each sits.
- Get the total in writing before booking flights. This is the same rule we apply everywhere on this site, and it exists because service fees vary by city and hospital tier.
✓Good signs
- The hospital quotes the lens separately from the service fee
- Written itemised estimates without you pressing hard
- Clear discussion of lens options matched to your eye and lifestyle
×Walk away if
- Only one bundled “package price” is offered, with no breakdown
- Premium lenses are pushed before your eye has even been examined
- “Results guaranteed” language appears anywhere in the pitch
What we cannot verify. Total out-of-pocket cataract surgery costs (lens + service fee) and US price comparisons: neither has an authoritative public source meeting this site’s bar, so we publish no such figures. The lens table above is the verifiable part of the bill.

The eye care page puts IOL prices next to refractive surgery in one table:
