Cosmetic procedures in China: prices, and why this page has almost none

This is the page where we publish the fewest numbers on the whole site — on purpose. Neither China nor the United States publishes sourced national prices for cosmetic surgery, and the ranges filling every other English page cannot be traced to a document. Here is what we do instead, and it is more useful than a table of borrowed figures.

The sourcing decision

Why you will not find a price table here

We checked both sides of the comparison, the way we check everything on this site.

On the US side: the American Society of Plastic Surgeons publishes the field’s standard statistics report. The 2025 edition contains procedure volumes only — no surgeon’s fees. The last edition that carried fee data has been withdrawn from the ASPS website, and archived copies are not obtainable from the original source. The fee ranges quoted across English-language pages (breast augmentation $4,500–8,000, rhinoplasty $7,500–12,500, and so on) all descend from that withdrawn document, passed along without a date, a sample or a link. We cannot verify them, so we do not use them.

On the China side: cosmetic procedures in private clinics are market-regulated — each institution sets its own prices, and private institutions do not publish their surgery tariffs. Public hospitals that offer aesthetic departments price some services under government rules and others under market-regulated rules that each hospital files and discloses locally. There is no national average to quote, and promotional prices from private clinics are marketing, not prices.

So this page refuses the genre. A price table here would be decoration. What follows instead: what a cosmetic bill is actually made of, what to verify before you pay, and the quote request that produces a number you can compare.

Scope

What a cosmetic surgery bill is made of

Every cosmetic surgery quote, in any country, decomposes into the same parts. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ own guidance makes the point that surgeon’s fees exclude anaesthesia and facility costs — a structural fact, not a price. Knowing the parts is what lets you compare two quotes honestly:

Part 1

Surgeon’s fee

Driven by the procedure’s length and difficulty and the surgeon’s seniority. The largest single line, and the one least tied to the city you are in.

Part 2

Anaesthesia

Local, sedation or general — priced by type and by the anaesthetist’s time. Often quoted separately, sometimes silently omitted from advertised totals.

Part 3

Facility & materials

Operating room, implants or injectables by product name, garments, and pathology where tissue is sent. The line where product substitution hides.

Two more lines appear only after the quote: medication and reviews during recovery, and — the one that breaks budgets — the revision policy, if the result needs a touch-up. Ask about both before you pay anything.

Per procedure

The five procedures people ask about — what actually moves the price

No numbers, by design. For each: the variable that explains most of the spread between a low and a high quote.

Procedure What actually moves the price
Rhinoplasty Whether it is functional (septum, breathing — may be partly billable as medical), the material used for augmentation (own cartilage, donor, or implant), and revision status. Revisions cost multiples of primaries everywhere.
Blepharoplasty (eyelid) Upper vs lower vs both, skin vs fat handling, and whether it is done under local or general anaesthesia. One of the shortest procedures, which is why per-minute facility pricing matters less here.
Hair transplant Quoted per graft: the count is the price. Advertised per-graft rates assume easy cases; the plan a consultation produces is the real number. Technique (FUT vs FUE) and the team’s size per session move it further.
Injectables The product itself: brand, strength, and units used. This is the category where counterfeit and grey-market product risk is highest — see product verification below before comparing any two quotes.
Breast augmentation The implant (manufacturer, model, surface) as a separately invoiced device, the surgical approach, and anaesthesia type. Ask for the implant’s registration number and keep the box documentation — it is your device record.

What is deliberately missing: a “typical price” row. Any figure we could put there would be unsourced, and an unsourced number next to five sourced pages on this site would be the weakest line we publish.

Verification

Licensing, and the product-verification question

Cosmetic care is the corner of medicine where checking credentials matters most, in every country. China’s system gives you four things to check, in Chinese, that an institution cannot fake.

医疗机构执业许可证Practice licence

Must be displayed, and its licensed scope must include medical aesthetics (医疗美容) at the right class — a 诊所, 门诊部 and 医院 are licensed for different procedure classes. Surgery under general anaesthesia requires the higher classes.

医师执业证书Practitioner licence

Ask for the licence of the surgeon who will operate, not the institution’s. The registered scope should include 美容外科 (cosmetic surgery) or the relevant specialty. Chinese licences carry a photo and a registration number.

药品与产品注册Product registration

Injectables and implants sold legally in China carry a National Medical Products Administration registration number (国械注进 for imported devices, 国药准字 for medicines). Ask to see the packaging and record the number before injection. Unopened product, shown on request, is the whole test.

价格公示Price disclosure

China’s provinces have been moving aesthetic services under explicit market-regulated price rules that require institutions to file and publicly list their items and prices — one provincial health-security administration, Hunan’s, now centralises disclosure of 202 cosmetology items across its major institutions. Wherever you go, ask the institution to show its own filed price list for the item you are buying. An institution that publishes its prices is telling you something.

The boundary we hold. We describe the licensing system; we do not judge any surgeon, and we do not tell you which procedure you need. If you have a medical condition that affects surgery — a bleeding disorder, uncontrolled diabetes, a history of poor wound healing — that belongs in a conversation with the treating clinician before anything is booked.

What we give you instead of a price table

The eight-line quote request

Two quotes that answer these eight lines can be compared honestly — against each other, and against a quote at home. Two quotes that answer three cannot.

  1. The exact procedure and technique, in writing — approach, incision type, implant or material by product name.
  2. The surgeon’s name and licence number — the person who will operate, not the clinic’s brand.
  3. The surgeon’s fee shown as its own line, separate from everything else.
  4. Anaesthesia type, provider, and fee as its own line.
  5. Facility fee and consumables as its own line, with implant/injectable product names and registration numbers.
  6. What the price excludes: medication, garments, pathology, reviews — each with a price if it is not included.
  7. The revision policy: what counts as a revision, who decides, and what it costs within the first year.
  8. The refund and cancellation terms, in writing, before any deposit is paid.

Questions we get

Straight answers

Is cosmetic surgery in China cheaper than in the US?

We do not publish a comparison, because neither side has a sourced national figure. China’s private cosmetic prices are unpublished; the US fee statistics are withdrawn. If a site prints “save 70%” for cosmetic work, ask for both original numbers and their dates. The comparison you can make honestly is between two written quotes that answer the eight lines above.

Is it safe to have cosmetic surgery in China?

China licenses institutions and registers individual practitioners, and the four checks above let you confirm both for a specific place and a specific surgeon. What we cannot tell you is whether a particular outcome will be good — nobody can, and a website that promises it is selling. Our role stops at sourcing, scope and verification.

How do I verify the injectable is genuine?

Before injection, ask to see the sealed product and its NMPA registration number, and photograph the packaging. Genuine imported devices carry 国械注进 numbers; medicines carry 国药准字. An institution that hesitates at this request has answered your question.

What if I need a revision after I fly home?

This is the practical failure mode of all cosmetic travel. The revision clause in the written quote — line 7 above — is your only protection, and it is worth more than any discount. Agree in advance what a revision costs, who judges the need, and how it is arranged across a border.

What this page is built on

Two documents and one structural fact — all linked or named so you can check them yourself.

American Society of Plastic Surgeons — plastic surgery statistics report, 2025 edition ASPS · plastic-surgery-statistics-report-2025 Checked in full, 31 October 2026 · used for: confirming the current report contains procedure volumes only, with no fee data — the reason no US fee ranges appear on this page plasticsurgery.org — plastic surgery statistics
2
Hunan Provincial Healthcare Security Administration — market-regulated medical service price management 湖南省医疗保障局 · 市场调节价医疗服务管理 Published October 2026 · used for: the price-disclosure framework for aesthetic services — 202 cosmetology items centralised for public listing, plus the provincial pricing-guideline rules Hunan NHSA via news syndication (full text)
3
ASPS guidance on cosmetic surgery costs — structural scope of surgeon’s fees ASPS · patient information Used for: the structural fact that surgeon’s fees exclude anaesthesia and facility costs — a scope statement, not a price plasticsurgery.org — cosmetic surgery cost guidance
How this page is maintained. The absence of numbers here is itself sourced and dated: we checked the current ASPS report and the withdrawn fee edition, and we monitor provincial price-disclosure rules as they roll out. If a sourced national figure appears on either side of the ocean, this page will grow a price table the day it can be verified.
