Getting treatment in Wuhan as a foreigner
Wuhan has the oldest foreigner-facing outpatient department in Hubei — opened in 2015 on the ninth floor of a new building, with a nurse beside every doctor — and it has two of the largest teaching hospitals in the country, twelve kilometres apart, with separate booking systems and a rivalry that locals take seriously. Knowing which one you are going to is most of the planning.
The case for the city
What Wuhan actually has that other cities don’t
An international outpatient department with a decade of practice. Union Hospital set up Hubei’s first department built specifically for foreign patients in 2015, on the ninth floor of its new outpatient building: 1,200 square metres, around forty specialties, and a model where a doctor and a nurse see one patient together. Ultrasound, ECG, bloods and infusions happen inside the department; larger scans are booked and escorted by staff.
Two giants with different instincts. Union (协和) and Tongji (同济) are both attached to the same medical school, both enormous, and both excellent — and they are not interchangeable. They sit in different districts, they book through different systems, and their strongest departments differ. Patients who assume “the hospital” means one building waste a day discovering otherwise.
A transport pattern that suits a short trip. Tianhe airport is on metro Line 2, which runs into Hankou and on to the optical valley without a transfer. Add a national high-speed rail hub and Wuhan becomes one of the easier Chinese cities to reach for a two- or three-day consultation.
Option one
Two giants and a third option
The first row is the only international department in the city whose service model we could verify in detail. The others are included because of what they are strongest at, not because they are easy to use.
| Hospital | Known for | International channel | District |
|---|---|---|---|
| Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College 华中科技大学同济医学院附属协和医院 |
Cardiac surgery, haematology, orthopaedics, general surgery | International Outpatient Department since 2015, 9th floor of the new outpatient building; 40 specialties; doctor-plus-nurse model; 24-hour emergency mobile; appointment at least 24 hours ahead; direct billing | Jianghan (Jiefang Avenue) |
| Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College 华中科技大学同济医学院附属同济医院 |
Transplant, rehabilitation, obstetrics, general surgery | No English-language international desk we could verify — expect Chinese-language registration | Qiaokou |
| Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University 武汉大学人民医院(湖北省人民医院) |
Cardiology, gastroenterology, ophthalmology | No dedicated international clinic verified | Wuchang |
On campuses: both giants run multiple campuses across the river, and a specialist you booked may hold clinic at only one of them. Union also runs an international clinic at its Chegu campus in the economic development zone. Confirm the campus in the appointment confirmation, not from a map search.
Why Union’s ninth floor is the default
It is the only place in the city where the whole visit — registration, consultation, bloods, ECG, ultrasound, pharmacy — can happen on one floor with an English-speaking nurse walking you through it. For a first assessment, a second opinion or a checkup, that removes most of the friction of a Chinese hospital.
The department also runs a 24-hour emergency mobile line, which matters in a city where the general emergency departments are not set up for foreign patients.
Why Tongji is not a substitute
Tongji is a formidable hospital — transplant volume, rehabilitation, obstetrics — and for a specific surgical opinion it may be the better clinical choice. What it is not is a soft landing: no English desk, no insurer billing, and a registration system that assumes Chinese literacy.
If a Chinese colleague or a family member can navigate it with you, go. If not, start at the international clinic and ask for a referral, which is how local patients get across town too.
Option two
The private sector: one cardiac hospital, and little else
Wuhan Asia Heart Hospital is the private option worth knowing: a specialist cardiac hospital, not a general one, with a long track record in angiography, stenting and bypass surgery, and a business model built on volume and fixed packages rather than on hotel-style rooms. For a straightforward cardiac procedure with a published price, it is a legitimate comparison against the public giants.
Outside cardiology, the private market is clinics rather than hospitals: dental, aesthetic, a few expatriate general-practice rooms. None of them is a substitute for an operating theatre, an ICU or a multidisciplinary team. Anyone offering you a “private international hospital” in Wuhan is describing a clinic with better furniture.
Before you fly
How to book, and what to have ready
The booking sequence that works
- Call the international desk directly — not the general switchboard, which will route you to a Chinese-language outpatient queue.
- Say which campus you want — large Chinese hospitals run several, and the international unit sits at one of them.
- State the problem, not the diagnosis — symptoms, duration, treatment so far. They route by department.
- Ask about direct billing before the visit — if your insurer is contracted, the desk needs the policy and an authorisation reference in advance, not on the day.
- Confirm the appointment in writing — you will be asked to show it at the entrance.
What to carry on the day
Passport, original — registration for foreign patients runs on the passport number.
Insurance card and authorisation reference — the reference is what makes direct billing work.
Prior imaging on disc — DICOM files. A phone photo of a screen cannot be measured or compared.
Alipay or WeChat Pay, funded — see the payment guide for the setup step most people get stuck on.
Realistic timing: the international clinic asks for at least 24 hours’ notice and is closed at weekends. Imaging slots — MRI, CT, PET — are the real constraint and can add several days. A three-day trip built around one consultation and one scan is realistic; a three-day trip built around surgery is not.
Getting in
From Tianhe airport to Hankou, Wuchang and Qiaokou
Tianhe International Airport (WUH) is north of the city and connected by metro Line 2, which runs through Hankou and under the river to Wuchang. It is the simplest airport-to-hospital run of any city on this site.
| From | Best option | Time | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tianhe (WUH) | Metro Line 2 to Zhongshan Park, then a short walk | About 45 min to Union Hospital | Metro fare by distance |
| Tianhe (WUH) | Metro Line 2, continuing to Wuchang | 60–75 min to Renmin Hospital | Metro fare by distance |
| Tianhe (WUH) | Taxi or ride-hailing | 35–50 min depending on the bridge | RMB 80–110 |
| Hankou (HSR) | Metro or taxi | 15–20 min to Union Hospital | Metro fare, or RMB 20–30 |
| Wuhan (HSR) | Metro Line 4 plus a transfer | 40–50 min to Wuchang hospitals | Metro fare by distance |
Two things that trip people up: Wuhan has three main railway stations and the high-speed trains do not all use the same one — Hankou is the one near Union Hospital. And the river bridges are the traffic bottleneck; a cross-river taxi at 8am can take twice as long as the metro, which runs under the water on its own schedule.
Where to base yourself
Pick the district by the hospital, not by the view
We publish no hotel prices, because we cannot verify them from a source that stays true for more than a week. What we can tell you is which bank of the river to stay on.
Jianghan — for Union Hospital
Hankou’s commercial district, walkable to the international clinic, on the airport metro line, and with the best concentration of hotels. The default base.
Qiaokou — for Tongji
West of Jianghan, older, cheaper, and the right base if your treatment is at Tongji. Adds thirty minutes to anything in Wuchang.
Wuchang — for Renmin Hospital and the universities
The other bank: universities, museums, the East Lake. Good for a longer stay; a river crossing away from the Hankou hospitals.
Hanyang — for Asia Heart Hospital
Quieter and cheaper, with the cardiac hospital on this side. Not a convenient base for anything else on this page.
One seasonal detail: Wuhan’s summer is one of the hottest and most humid in China, and its winter is damp and unheated. Spring and autumn are the comfortable windows; if you must come in July or August, book a hotel with reliable air conditioning and keep the walk to the hospital short.
The practical layer
Language, payment, and the card that works
Language. English exists in the international clinic and at the airport; elsewhere assume Chinese. Wuhan is a university city with a large student population, so hiring an interpreter for a day is easier and cheaper here than in most cities.
Payment. Alipay and WeChat Pay, funded from a foreign card before you fly. The international clinic can also take international cards at its own desk, which is not true of the general cashiers. See the payment guide.
Getting around. The metro is extensive, cheap and signed in English. Cross-river journeys are almost always faster underground than in a car. Ride-hailing works in English through Alipay’s built-in mini-programs.
The sequence
Your first 48 hours, in order
Day one — land and orient
1. Take metro Line 2 from the airport rather than a taxi; it is faster in traffic and drops you in Hankou.
2. Get a local SIM or eSIM at the airport before leaving the terminal.
3. Confirm which hospital and which campus — Union or Tongji, Hankou or Qiaokou. This is the classic Wuhan mix-up.
4. Fund Alipay or WeChat Pay on wifi, before you meet a cashier.
Day two — be seen
1. Arrive at the ninth floor early, with your passport. Registration for foreign patients takes longer than the local queue.
2. Bring prior imaging on disc. A phone photo of a screen cannot be measured.
3. Ask what happens on the day of the scan — escorted or unaccompanied, and whether results are same-day.
4. Get copies of everything before you leave, per our records guide.
Questions we get
Short answers
Union or Tongji?
Union if you want the English-language international path. Tongji if a specific specialist there is the reason for the trip and you have a Chinese speaker to navigate it. Do not assume one referral covers both.
Can I walk into the international clinic?
Technically yes, practically no: it runs on appointments at least 24 hours ahead, weekdays only. Arriving unannounced means waiting, or being redirected.
Is Wuhan safe for a solo patient?
The city is orderly and the hospital district is busy at most hours. The practical risks are language and paperwork, not safety. Keep your passport on you — registration depends on it.
How does Wuhan compare on price?
Mid-range for a Chinese megacity: cheaper than Beijing or Shanghai at international-clinic level, more expensive than a smaller provincial capital. Use our comparison method rather than a headline number.
What about a visa?
Visa-free transit does not cover a hospital stay. Read the visa guide and get the hospital’s invitation letter in writing if you are flying in for planned treatment.
