Search “dental implant China vs US” and every result offers a percentage. Almost none can show you where both numbers came from. Here is the version with the sources left in — including the part where one side of the comparison simply has no verifiable figure.
What China actually publishes
Between 2023 and 2024, China’s National Healthcare Security Administration rebuilt the economics of dental implants in public hospitals with three moves: a cap on the service fee, a national bulk purchase for implant systems, and a bidding round for crowns. Each produced a published, checkable price.
| Line item | What it covers | Published price |
|---|---|---|
| Service fee | Consultation, routine tests, imaging, implant placement, crown fitting, scanning and design — capped per implant. | ≤ ¥4,500 |
| Implant system | Fixture and abutment, from 40 products selected in the January 2023 provincial alliance purchase. | ¥548 – 1,855 |
| Crown | The visible tooth, from the March 2023 crown bidding round. | ¥100 – 656 |
| Routine single implant | Capped fee + average implant (≈¥900) + average crown (≈¥300) | ≈ ¥5,700 |
Two caveats that belong in every citation of this number. First, the ¥5,700 is our arithmetic on published averages — the government publishes the parts, not the total. Second, high-cost regions may lift the service fee by up to 20%, and the routine-case figure excludes extraction, bone grafting, sedation and follow-up visits. A graft alone can exceed the cost of the implant system.
What the US side publishes
Nothing comparable. US dental fees are set practice by practice, negotiated insurer by insurer. The largest claims database, FAIR Health, sells postcode-level lookups rather than publishing a national average. The $3,000–$6,000 implant ranges that dominate English pages come from clinics and lead-generation sites quoting each other — no survey, no sample, no date behind any of them.
What you can honestly say
Three things, and they are enough to plan with:
- The regulated floor is real. In a Chinese public hospital, the service fee is capped by regulation and the parts went through a government bulk purchase. That is a price structure, not a marketing claim.
- The US number is a quote, not a statistic. Whatever a US dentist charges you is real, but it is one practice’s price — the same is true of every implant clinic in China. Quotes compare with quotes, not with averages.
- Scope decides everything. A ¥2,000 quote and a ¥9,000 quote can both be honest if they cover different scopes. Fix the scope before comparing any two numbers.
How to build your own comparison
It takes two written quotes and the ten questions in our dental care guide — which scope the price covers, the implant brand and model, the crown material, graft and extraction lines, sedation, follow-ups, warranty terms, and the failure policy. Get the same ten answers from a dentist at home and from a hospital in China, put them side by side, and you will have a comparison more honest than anything on the first page of search results.
